Peace rally held at Leh

Excelsior Correspondent

LEH, June 8: A mammoth peace rally was held here today in which people from all communities and walks of life participated in order to impress upon the Governments of Pakistan and India to defuse tensions on the borders and to solve all the bi-lateral problems including Kashmir issue, peacefully through dialogue.

As per a release the call for the peace rally was given by Ladakh Buddhist Association, but the participation was total. The rally started from mid-town and ended at the Polo Ground where speakers from all communities spoke against war and in favour of peace between the two important neighbour of the sub-continent.

Many of the speakers pointed out that war has brought only misery and un-surmountable problems, to the people of border areas (on both sides), who have been and will be, the victims of war in case the two countries speak the language of war again.

All the speakers spoke against the mechanism of terrorism and many believed that the Kashmir problem was a reality, as a good part of our State was still under the illegal occupation of Pakistan and the Kashmir issue needed to be resolved through dialogue and not through war.Government offices, shops, business establishments and schools remained closed till 2 pm and transport remained off road, in support of peace.

The presidents of Ladakh Buddhist Association, the Anjuman Immamia Moin-ul-Islam, the paster Moravian Mission, Hindu Mahasabha, Merchant Association, representatives of transport unions and student bodies resolved to work for peace in future and appeal to the two Governments to enter into dialogue for everlasting solutions instead of of wasting national property in mindless pursuit of war games which shall benefit none at the end of the day. The rally ended with a strong appeal to the Governments of India and Pakistan to immediately de-escalate tensions on the border and start the process of dialogue in the best national interest of the two countries.
