Il 16 Luglio 2001, il Consiglio Comunale della Città di Firenze ha conferito all'unanimità la cittadinanza onoraria alla prigioniera politica tibetana a Nawang Sangdrol.

On Monday the 16th of July the town council of Florence unanimously voted a motion aimed at granting the Honorary Citizenship to NGAWANG SANGDROL, Tibetan nun and prisoner of consciousness.

Ngawang’s story perfectly embodies Tibet’s tragedy: she was arrested in 1992 after taking part in a peaceful demonstration for the independence of Tibet, and she as been sentenced to a total of 21 years’ imprisonment. At the moment she is the Tibetan political prisoner serving the longest sentence. She has been repeatedly maltreated and tortured.

It is extremely important that a city abounding in history and culture like Florence has decided to show in this way its solidarity to the person that better embodies the non- violent fight to the brutality of the Chinese authorities. This seems to be particulary important now, with events such as the Olympics and the WTO, which make it particularly relevant to remember what is really happening in China.

The idea sparked off last year on the occasion of a conference about Tibet when the representative of the Italian Section of Amnesty International suggested the project to the board representative of the Green party.
