Zanskar Action Committee threatens agitation

Zanskar Action Committee has expressed resentment over having been allotted three councilor seats in the Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council and resolved to start agitation and boycott elections if at least 10 councilor seats were not allotted to Zanskar in the Kargil AHDC.
On the announcement of formation of Autonomous Hill Development Council for Kargil, the people of Zanskar tehsil, comprising 62 percent area of Kargil district and having more than 61 villages situated in most difficult terrain in this hilly and snowy Valley have stated that they were expecting more than 50 percent representation for ensuring speedy development of centuries old undeveloped remote area.
The committee said three seats have been allotted to Zanskar on the open plea that only three seats have been given to Muslims in Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council, so three seats were being given to Buddhist majority Zanskar tehsil.
The committee said it was highly discriminatory thinking as they being in the biggest tehsil of Kargil district deserved justice and were not to be victimized as a retaliatory action. It said in Leh AHDC there were only three Muslim villages and each of these villages have been given representation. If this criteria was adopted in their case Kargil tehsil may be left with three to four seats.
The people held demonstration and burnt the effigy of communal minded authorities and it was unanimously resolved to start agitation.
